Maybe it was the translation, but I found it almost impenetrable. Long philosophical digressions left me confused about the story. I was never sure what was happening and it just seemed to come to a stop rather than have an ending.

Plan D portrays an interesting proposition. The story is based in Germany in 2011, the elephant in the room though is that we're talking EAST Germany, and the Wall didn't come down back then. Instead the East Germans opted for "Revitalistion" and the two Germanys remained separate, one locked in the past, the other in prosperity. The story introduces East German detective Martin Wegener, as he investigates a bizarre murder, which turns out to have major implications for East-West talks about to [...]

Starts out ok, gets better, descends into tosh. Great idea to explore. Unnecessary conversations in the protagonist's head lead the way into daft writing. A better editor should have improved it.

I really really really wanted to like this book, and I did for pages at a time, but not enough to go to 3 stars. This is more of a 2.5 stars for me. The main character wanders around in his own head way to much for my tastes. The plot is good and seems weirdly believable given how socialist paradises work, but the effort to slog through the pages was just too much for me to recommend this without reservations. There are some excellent imaginative well-render moments in this book, but it is weigh [...]

(Marthie) If you love classic Cold War spy thrillers — the masterpieces of John le Carré, Robert Harris, and Graham Greene — then you will adore Simon Urban’s modern twist on these chilling novels: Plan D.Plan D is a brilliant fast-paced thriller. But this destructive story of crime also addresses many interesting questions involving the lives of ordinary people, living under difficult regimes.Urban centres his story around this question: what if the Berlin never fell?

Set in an alternate modern world where history took a somewhat different course in the late 20th cenhtury where the Berlin Wall never fell and Germany remains divided, the premise for this gripping thriller is as intriguing as it is creepy (at least for someone like me, who was born in the GDR but had the good fortune to be able to grow up in a reunited Germany). Intelligent and suspenseful, this was an engaging and thoughtprovoking read.

    19. Sven on said:

The question what if the german reunion never happened is answered within the pages of this book. Urban creates a believeable world where the DDR is still part of the present and not just the past. His characters are intelligent, flawed and all too human, sometimes maybe even too human. But in the end this book takes you on a journey into a parrallel world and outside of genres and likes this book is for everyone. Just try it.

Knihy z alternativní historie mám velmi rád. Historie, kterou nabízí Simon Urban, je ještě depresivnější než Harrisova Otčina. Ke sjednocení Německa nikdy nedošlo, východoněmecký komunismus na sebe vzal podobu čínského modelu a Státní bezpečnost dostala do rukou mocné zbraně v podobě moderních technologií.Hlavní hrdina i celá atmosféra je velmi podobna Chabonovu Židovskému policejnímu klubu, tentokráte umocněna o konfrontaci dvou Němecek.

While the plotline was initially difficult to interpret The finish was unexpected. I did find the whole thing suffering from "over description". Most things and events were described down to the Nth degree which made me rather want to rush the book and get it over with. That said when all was revealed it had a great plot.

It got better, although it never quite got out of the crime thriller mould. I would've liked a bit more exploration of the alternate timeline, although I enjoyed the descriptions of the 2011 DDR very much. Now I'm hungry for a Wart-burger.
